This canvas began as a thrift store purchase featuring a champagne bottle with gold lettering. It was in good condition and I didn't want to prime and repaint it. I looked at the form and wondered what could cover the shape of a bottle. I saw my book of angels and the idea was conceived. Next, I contemplated the color of the figure. I wanted to do something high contrast against the white and different than what is usually seen for angel skin tone. I was like, what the hell, I'll paint her black. The rest just came on its own.
Inspired by heraldic symbols and notions of mortal life, this angel of death is the keeper of time for all the living. Wings laced with tears and armed for battle, she's is the bearer of sorrow.
